Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information this site collects when you visit, how it is used, and the choices and rights you have.
Updated July 9, 2026
1. Who We Are
howtolaunder.com (the “Site”) is the official website for the book How to Launder Money: A Guide for Law Enforcement, Prosecutors and Policymakers. The Site is operated on behalf of the Book’s authors from the United States (“we,” “us,” or “our”). For the purposes of the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we are the data controller for the limited personal data described below.
2. What We Collect
The Site has no user accounts, no forms, and no comment features, and we do not knowingly collect names, email addresses, or payment information. The only data processed when you visit is:
- Analytics data — via Google Analytics 4 and StatCounter, including pages viewed, approximate location (city level, derived from a truncated IP address), device and browser type, referring site, and interactions on the Site.
- Server and security logs — our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes IP addresses and request data as needed to deliver the Site and protect it from abuse.
3. Cookies and Similar Technologies
Google Analytics and StatCounter set cookies or use similar identifiers to distinguish visitors and measure how the Site is used. These are analytics cookies, not advertising cookies; we do not run advertising or sell ad space on the Site. You can block or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings, and the Site remains fully usable without them.
4. How We Use This Information
We use analytics data solely to understand how visitors find and use the Site — for example, which pages are read most and which countries visitors come from — so we can improve the Site and understand interest in the Book. Where GDPR applies, our legal basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in operating and improving the Site (Article 6(1)(f)). We do not use the data to identify individual visitors, and we do not sell or rent any visitor data.
5. Who Receives Data
Analytics data is processed on our behalf by Google (Google Analytics) and StatCounter, and hosting data by Cloudflare. Each processes data under its own privacy policy: Google, StatCounter, and Cloudflare. When you follow a link to a retailer (such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Waterstones), that retailer collects data under its own policy; some retailer links are affiliate links, which the retailer uses to attribute the referral.
6. International Transfers
The Site is hosted in the United States, and analytics providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where data is transferred from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, our providers rely on approved safeguards such as the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework or Standard Contractual Clauses.
7. Retention
We retain aggregated analytics reports indefinitely. Identifier-level analytics data is retained by Google Analytics for 14 months and then deleted automatically. Security logs are retained by our hosting provider for short periods consistent with its policies.
8. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (in the EU/EEA), the Information Commissioner’s Office (in the UK), or your state attorney general (in the US). California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know and delete; we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in the CCPA. Because we hold no directly identifying information about visitors, exercising these rights will usually mean clearing your own cookies or using the opt-out tools below.
9. Opting Out of Analytics
- Google Analytics: install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- StatCounter: set the StatCounter refusal cookie.
- Or block third-party cookies entirely in your browser settings.
10. Children
The Site is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new “Updated” date.
12. Contact
Privacy questions and requests may be directed to the Site operator via the LinkedIn profile linked in the footer of this Site.
